The year is 1943. An army company takes up new quarters - a tired, disaffected company of men long weary of the war. At their head is Captain Charles Ryder, the narrator and obsrver of events in Brideshead Revisited. To his amazement he discovers that this new billet is Brideshead Castle, scene of some of the happiest years of his youth. As the memories come flooding back, he sees himself once again as an Oxford undergraduate, recalling his first meeting with the wild, eccentric Lord Sebastian Flyte, younger son of Lord Marchmain of Brideshead Castle. Soon Charles is drawn into Sebastian's glittering circle and introduced to his family, who will have a lasting influence on his life. His stormy friendship with Sebastian is to lead him into a world both of anchantment and grief. |
