Charles, now painting in Paris, is unaware of events concerning the Marchmain family until he hears from Rex Mottram, a friend of Julia, that Lady Marchmain, now fatally ill, is asking for her younger son, Sebastian, who has disappeared. Rex begs Charles to try and find his friend and bring him back to England. Rex also announces his intention of marrying Julia. As Lady Marchmain is opposed to the match, he has obtained Lord Marchmain's consent - agreeing to adopt Julia's Catholic faith. Their plans are shattered when Julia's elder brother discovers that Rex is a divorcee and thus cannot be married in the Roman Catholic church. Julia agrees to marry him nevertheless, in a Protestant church. Meanwhile, Charles has discovered that Sebastian is now in North Africa, and sets out to find him there. He is appalled to find his friend living in squalid surroundings with a young Foreign Legion deserter and much too ill through drink and neglect to travel to England. Lady Marchmain dies without ever seeing Sebastian again. |
