Resumen: |
Bridey startles Charles and Julia by announcing he is to marry an Admiral's widow. Rex has reluctantly agreed to a divorce from Julia, so she can marry Charles, but it is clear that she is uneasy about what she sees as her fall from Grace. In the eyes of her church she is already living in sin with Rex, and her conscience is tormenting her over the irregularity of her relationship with Charles, The agnostic Charles angers and wounds her by his dismissal of her fears as 'bosh'. When Lord Marchmain suddenly returns to Brideshead - to die, as his family suspect - he is appalled by Bridey's choiceof wife, seeing her as vulgar and unsuitable as mistress of Brideshead Castle. It is not until many years later that Charles learns that Lord Marchmain left Brideshead to Julia, for after her father's death Julia tells Charles she cannot, after all marry him. As memory dissolves, Charles Ryder returns to 1943 -. with Brideshead now a bleak military encampment. Ironically, he and his men have been detailed to clean up the castle in readiness to receive Brigade headquarters. He stops for a moment to pray in the family chapel - a last acknowledgement of the profound influence of the Marchmains upon his life. |
