A people in crisis... The troubled Indian nation is now gripped by fear and chaos. The British find themselves threatened on two fronts: by the vivious war with the Japanese and by the radically violent struggle for free India from British rule. The life of cocktail parties and military balls is gone, now replaced by murder and rioting in the streets. Even the Laytons find their peacefull life shattered by the war as everyone is drawn into the mounting unrest. The turmoil of war is reflected in the romantic conflict Sarah Layton who cannot reconcile her involvement with Ronald Merrick and her increasing affection for the handsome youung officer Guy Perron.
